Exploring Genre: Writing a Successful Thriller
Suspense, danger and mystery are the usual ingredients of thriller films hooking the audience to the screen. Generating these emotions at the right time and pace is key to success in this genre.
Based on his Story-Type Method® Emmanuel Oberg will explore essential tools for developing successful thrillers, either for Film or TV. Following a brief introduction on how Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs applies to thrillers specifically, the two-hour lecture will focus on one of the most important aspects of thriller writing, which is the management of information and audience POV through the use of mystery, surprise and dramatic irony. It will also discuss Cold Starts and Encore Twists, which are often used in thrillers.
Using clips and examples from successful thrillers such as Misery, Se7en, Gravity, The Silence of the Lambs, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, The Call, Children of Men and The Bourne Trilogy, the lecture will look at some of the storytelling techniques needed to master this very popular genre, from creating tension and suspense to designing a satisfying ending.
Emmanuel Oberg is screenwriter, script consultant and author with over two decades of experience in the film and TV industry. After selling his first project to Warner Bros as a co-writer, he went on to be commissioned by StudioCanal and Gold Circle before writing solo for Working Title / Universal and Film4. Emmanuel has been involved as a script consultant with many international training organisations (e.g. ACE, Screen Training Ireland). He also worked as an expert for the MEDIA program and as a senior development executive for the UK Film Council. His book "Screenwriting Unchained: Reclaim Your Creative Freedom and Master Story Structure" introduces his Story-Type Method® designed to help filmmakers identify their story-type and manage development process more effectively.
